In many intermediate and above courses such as COU, First Certificate and  Selectividad (in Spain) it is necessary to be able to know how to transform sentences from direct to reported speech. On of the most important things that you must know is how to change the tenses of the verbs. This page may help

Simple Present - Simple past 
"She  lives  in Paris"
Present Continuous - Past Continuous
